It takes a while to get used to living frugally but once you do, you'll never go back. In the beginning of my frugality, I read The Tightwad Gazette by Amy Something and that set things in motion. We didn't have credit card debt but we started paying off all other non-mortgage debt that we could. Currently we only have one vehicle payment and our mortgage. I do use coupons, and while others will argue the time that it takes to cut, file, etc., my coupon use absolutely pays off. I also buy clearance meat at the store, preferably when it's on sale and then take the $2 off per package. I do CVS and Walgreens and haven't paid out of pocket for toothpaste, soap and deodorant, etc., for a long, long time. Check out other frugal websites and you'll find out when good coupons are available. Suave had one a couple of months ago when you got a free product (up to $3 value). There are tons of good deals and coupons out there -- you just have to keep an eye out for them.

Good Luck! You are headed in the right direction and you will never go back to your old ways!

Great question and perfect analogy. When I miss the gym for a few days I get sore if I try to lift too much on my first day back and never mind my struggles after a few missed days on the dreadmill... I think the initial steps for getting out of debt are kinda the same. Once on a routine it becomes easier and the "no" muscle gets stronger.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to reading along!

I know what you are talking about. Recently one or the other of us has said, "Lets buy subs" (not as damning as going to a restaurant, but still...) and the other (OK, it's always me) has said sadly but resolutely, "No."

So we did actually buy subs yesterday. My resolve is not constant. But we used to just tempt one another into something like that more easily than a dog has to be tempted if you set a pound of hamburger on the floor. Meaning that before the words were out of one mouth, the other person was racing to see who could get out the door first.

At least cutting down on these indulgent outings a large percentage of the time has really helped, though. It's a few form of discipline that is good for the checkbook AND the waistline.
